THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD MOVIE REVIEW
"If you have a big dream, what do you want to be?" is one of the most frequently asked questions since childhood. It is said that we understand where to go. But even after making choices and then planning, do we really always know what we want? Are desires absolute, or relative, always shifting along with changing phases of life, experiences, emotional dynamics, interpersonal relationships, and other things that define humans?
Julie (Renate Reinsve) initially majored in medicine, before shifting to psychology. When he was opening a photo gallery, he immediately became interested in photography. There are no external factors behind these changes. All decisions are Julie's personal choice. He did what he wanted. But why is discontent reluctant to leave?

He has had several relationships. Most recently, Julie is dating Aksel (Anders Danielsen Lie) who is 15 years her senior. Julie also showed an interest in writing. Once upon a time she discussed feminism and oral sex through her writings. How can he, with a work like that, fall in love with an underground comic artist whose creations are often criticized for the nuances of sexism?
The script, written by the director, Joachim Tier (Oslo, August 31st), with Eskil Vogt, divides the narrative into 12 acts plus a prologue and epilogue. Each discusses the character's indecision in making choices, or conversely, their belief in an idea, only to later do the opposite of that idea. The episodic impression may be difficult to remove, but it is patched by the strong common thread between each act. The plot also appears varied thanks to the various events that occur.

One of Julie's inner conflicts is about children. At the age of four, Aksel wanted a baby. Julie didn't deny that she wanted that too, but not now. "Are you waiting for something?" asked Aksel. But Julie never gave a definite answer. He was sure of his decision, but as for the reasons behind it, that was a different story. If so, does that mean Julie knows what she wants?
The second round (titled Cheating) brings together Julie and Eivind (Herbert Nordrum) at a party. Both of them feel attracted, but the reluctance to betray their respective partners makes them "only" spend the night pushing the infidelity lines to their furthest limits. Julie and Eivind parted ways in the morning, but of course it wouldn't be the last meeting. Later, Tier takes their relationship even further, through imaginative sequences that will be remembered for years to come.
These sequences prove the creativity of the script, which in fact can also occasionally invite laughter. Act six (Finnmark Highlands) is purely a comedy, showing how the vacation of Eivind and his girlfriend, Sunniva (Maria Grazia Di Meo), creates an unexpected turn. "The sum of Western guilt sat beside him on the couch" is the most brilliant comedic sentence in the film.

Renate Reinsve won the Best Actress trophy at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for her performance. Reinsve's appearance was so powerful that it represented the turmoil of anyone who witnessed it. The upheaval is called "indecision", which often makes belief seem like an illusion. The Worst Person in the World does not provide answers to the character's pile of question marks. Because the answer may not really be there, and we can just keep running without being able to stop time, without really knowing what we want.
